You may have seen Ehrlichiosis making headlines in the news recently so here is a little bit of info about the disease!

Ehrlichiosis is a disease dogs can get from the brown dog tick. The severity of the disease varies and common symptoms are fever, anaemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia (low blood platelets) and jaundice. Ehrlichiosis is unlikely to establish in places like Goulburn as its too humid and too cold therefore the disease is only a concern in dogs that have recently been in far north WA or NT. We recommend covering your dogs with a tick treatment such as Bravecto or Nexguard, especially if they are hunting dogs.

If you are concerned or to discuss the best parasite prevention for your pets please phone us on 4821 1966.

This gorgeous little bird was bought into us here at Southern Tablelands Vet Hospital when some holidaymakers found him waddling around the McDonald’s car park at Sutton Forrest with a sore leg. Dr Lucy gave this little guy a thorough health check and found he was in great nick and had faith the sore leg would heal over time! Practice Manager and Senior Nurse Katrina volunteered to care for the bird until we could either reunite him with his owners or find him a new place to live. Two weeks later the leg had healed really well so we posted a photo of him to our Facebook page and that afternoon we had found his owners! Although they were hesitant to believe the bird could have travelled 20km, a yellow tag on his leg proved that he in fact had had quite the holiday himself!

Snake Season Has Well and Truly Begun! https://southerntablelandsvets.com.au/snake-season/ https://southerntablelandsvets.com.au/snake-season/#respond Fri, 04 Sep 2020 10:14:00 +0000 https://southerntablelandsvets.com.au/?p=109 After being found collapsed on his owner’s front door step, Charlie presented to us on 4th September as an After Hours Emergency.

After being found collapsed on his owner’s front door step, Charlie presented to us on 4th September as an After Hours Emergency. Charlie was unable to use his back legs and was hypothermic (very low body temperature). It was initially suspected that Charlie had either been hit by a car or had some form of toxicity. Bloods were run and they showed that Charlie was dehydrated and had an extremely elevated CK level. An elevated CK level is typically associated with snake bites but also from trauma if there has been muscle damage.

Charlie was placed on IV fluids and we started to warm his body temperature using heating pads and heated saline bags. We took radiographs of Charlie’s abdomen and chest and there were no signs of trauma or fractures/dislocations to his spine or pelvis. After further discussion with Charlie’s owners regarding the elevated CK level they elected for us to administer Padula Tiger-brownantivenom.

After being on fluids overnight and monitored in hospital Charlie began to show signs of improvement! During a visit with his owners on 5th September we observed Charlie walking around the room normally and interacting like his normal self. We sent Charlie home that day and then saw him for a recheck on 12th September. Charlie’s owners were pleased to inform us that he was back to his normal self.

Please be very vigilant with your pets this snake season! If you notice any unusual behaviour from your pet give us a call on 4821 1966 or pop up to the hospital in cases of emergency.

Two of Dini’s Nine Lives Lost to Gunshot Wounds https://southerntablelandsvets.com.au/dinis-gunshot/ https://southerntablelandsvets.com.au/dinis-gunshot/#respond Sun, 23 Aug 2020 22:00:02 +0000 https://southerntablelandsvets.com.au/?p=111 Dini presented to us on 24th August. Dini presented to us on 24th August. He had been found after he’d been missing for some time and appeared to have either been hit by a car or possibly sustained a gunshot wound.

Dini was breathing rapidly, unable to stand on his right front leg and had a nasty open wound on the same leg. With a closer look to that right front leg it appeared crumbled and to not have normal function upon palpation with multiple piece fractures.

After taking radiographs of Dini it was clear gunshot pellets have caused a multi-fragment fracture of the right mid shaft humerous. It was clear that Dini needed to have surgery to amputate the leg. This had actually been the second time in his life that Dini had suffered gunshot wounds!

Dini was given pain relief, placed on IV fluids and we helped to raise his body temperature with heat pads and warmed saline bags to allow him to become stable for surgery the next day.

The next day Dini was assessed and cleared for surgery. Dr Graeme Collins (our regular locum and orthopaedic wizard) carried out the forelimb amputation of the right front leg at the level of the shoulder point. Dr Collins debrided the damaged muscle and sutured the skin closed.

Dini recovered really well! The day after the surgery the wound looked great and Dini was comfortable so we sent him home to rest and recover.

10 Days post-surgery Dini returned to STVH for a recheck and suture removal. The wound had healed great and Dini was adapting quickly to the amputation.
